One of the goals of the Open Waters initiative is to grow Louisiana’s “Blue Economy” – businesses having to do with the oceans, seas, harbors, ports, and coastal zones. We’re talking about industries as diverse as oil and gas, logistics, transportation, tourism, seafood, shipbuilding, recreational sports, coastal restoration, and more.
We’re here to provide education about maritime industry as well as support to current students and anyone looking for a meaningful career within the river’s supply chain.

ACADEMIC PARTNERSHIPS
The UL System is partnering with Open Waters to raise awareness of maritime job opportunities, engage industry leaders to identify maritime workforce needs, and leverage regional economic efforts to strengthen multimodal transportation.
This partnership will result in the following outcomes: (1) increased awareness of the maritime workforce opportunities across all student demographics, particularly among underrepresented populations; (2) the development and implementation of maritime academic programs across UL System institutions; and (3) the establishment of support programs to improve retention of students from traditionally underrepresented and underserved groups.
